If you want to join the exciting world of podcasting, follow the simple steps below on how to set up a low budget podcast.

You will be participating in a podcast boom that has taken the world by storm. In America alone, there has been a 175% increase in the number of Americans listening to podcasts, over the last five years. Also, around 90 million people tune in to podcasts each month on an average in the country.

Globally, there has been a steady rise in the number of podcasts listened to in different parts of the world. You have the advantage of uploading your podcast on platforms that are accessed by listeners world-wide! All you have to do is set-up a simple podcast according to your budget, and you are ready to record and upload.

Steps to Set Up A Low Cost Podcast

Corey Ferreira lists a few simple steps on to have your low budget podcast ready for recording and uploading.

“1. Come up with a concept (a topic, name, format, and target length for each episode).

2. Design artwork and write a description to “brand” your podcast.

3. Record and edit your audio files (such as MP3s). A microphone is recommended (more on podcast equipment later).

4. Find a place to host your files (such as a file host that specializes in podcasts, like Libsyn or Podbean).

5. Syndicate these audio files into an RSS feed so they can be distributed through Apple Podcasts and downloaded or streamed on any device on-demand”.

Before you get the equipment lined up, it is important to know what you want to present to your audiences. Sketching a basic framework for the podcasts is highly important to understand how to engage with the listeners. For example, do you want to make a series of podcasts, or episodes for a show, or simply have guest interviews for a simple talk show? Deciding early helps in buying/assembling the correct equipment as well.

Basic Equipment For a Podcast

Choose between a smartphone, a handheld sound recording device, or a microphone to begin recording the podcast. Out of the three, a microphone will give you the best output for a podcast. According to Dane Swan, “…using a handheld voice recorder is easier than using a DAW in many cases, but it’s not the most inexpensive way to start. For most of us, the most inexpensive handheld device is our phones”.

Upgrading your phone to sound recording quality is also not too expensive. If you already have a good sound recorder on your phone, then use it to begin recording. “Most of us own phones that can record audio. All you need to produce a podcast is a silent place to record your thoughts. A good microphone to upgrade your phone can cost between $40 — $200”.

Between handheld recording devices and microphones, it is best to purchase a microphone as podcasts are usually recorded in a studio or at home on your computer. For outdoor recordings, buying a sound recording device for less than $150 is quite easy, and a number of options are also available.

A lot of video and audio recording software can help you record your podcast with people who live far away from you. “The most obvious is Skype…Zoom conferencing apps also allow you to record audio and video. If you have multiple computers, or an audio recorder you could probably use Instagram, Facebook, or even Discord. However, there are companies offering free and inexpensive VOIP audio recording services for commercial use that produce better results”.

There are other options that offer free and easy use. You can get “…a free account with CleanFeed, but there’s also Zencastr and Ringr…Ringr has been around the longest…However, the three I’ve mentioned have free(CleanFeed, ZenCastr), or low-cost (Ringr)tiers”, says Dane Swan.

You could buy a pair of low-budget headphones/earphones to complete your kit, if necessary. They will come handy though, while editing your sound clips on a DAW. Headphones are also useful for playback while recording to gauge the quality of sound.
